AMERICAN-LIBERIAN HERITAGE

THE REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA (America’s creation, prototype and staunch ally on the African continent for nearly 200 years) was founded in 1821 as a new homeland for free African-American and Afro-Caribbean emigrants and their African tribal kinfolk whom they met in the former Grain Coast (now Republic of Liberia). Today, Liberia still enjoys benefits of the American-Liberian Heritage the proverbial umbilical cord forged through rare convergence of historical events in human affairs — which refers to the mutually cherished, centuries-old “tie that binds” (US-Liberia Relations).

THE TIE THAT BINDS

“I TRUST THAT THE POLICY OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, TOWARD THE REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA, will be so shaped as to fulfill our national duty to the Liberian people who, by the efforts of this Government and through the material enterprise of American citizens, were established on the African coast and set on the pathway to sovereign statehood. In an early treaty with Liberia, there is a provision under which the United States may be called upon for advice and/or assistance to the Republic of Liberia, in accordance with our historical interest and moral guardianship … to assure permanence to a country of much sentimental and real interest to a large body of our American citizens.” — William Howard Taft (1857-1930); 27th President of the United States of America (1909-1913)

U.S.-LIBERIA RELATIONS
“The United States established diplomatic relations with [the Republic of] Liberia in 1864; 17 years after it declared independence [following its founding through American philanthropy]. U.S. assistance [to post-conflict Liberia today] is focused on consolidating democratic progress; improving capacity, transparency, and accountability of governance institutions; promoting broad-based, market-driven economic growth; improving access to high-quality educational and health services; and professionalizing Liberia’s military and civilian security forces, while helping Liberia build capacity to plan, implement, and sustain its own development efforts in each sector” (U.S. Department of State, Washington, DC).

BASILEIA INDUSTRIAL UNIVERSITY

BASILEIA INDUSTRIAL UNIVERSITY (of undergraduate, graduate, doctoral, professional and applied studies) — a results-oriented American-Liberian Heritage institution of higher learning — is an unfolding research-planning-teaching-learning-service laboratory for the UN Sustainable Development Goals for Liberia: “17 interconnected and ambitious goals which address the major development challenges faced by people in Liberia and around the world…a global call to action to end poverty, protect the earth’s environment and climate, and ensure that people everywhere can enjoy peace and prosperity” (THE UNITED NATIONS IN LIBERIA).

Now developing in post-conflict Liberia (West Africa) and in the Diaspora Liberian Community (USA), the BASILEIA INDUSTRIAL UNIVERSITY (rooted in the Judeo-Christian tradition) derives its raison d’être (reason for existence) from the Divine Mandate (God’s Command):

“MAKE THE COMMUNITY LIVABLE AGAIN…”
“You’ll use the old rubble of past lives to build anew, rebuild the foundations from out of your past. You’ll be known as those who can fix anything, restore old ruins, rebuild and renovate, make the community livable again” (Isaiah 58:12, MSG).
